Same-sex marriage banned in Russia: Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a new law on Monday. The law outlaws same-sex marriage or outlaws those who marry ‘transgender’, shocking the LGBTQ+ community. Putin’s new law prevents transgender people from becoming foster or adoptive parents.
Passed unanimously in both houses
The bill was passed unanimously in both chambers. It prohibits a person from seeking medical assistance for ‘gender reassignment’ or changing one’s gender in official documents and public records. At the same time, in this new bill, medical assistance to people born with congenital anomalies is made an exception, i.e. it is not prohibited in this law.
Foster parents if not transgender
This new Russian law cancels the recognition of marriages by ‘gender reassignment’ and prevents transgender people from becoming foster or adoptive parents. The ban is said to stem from the Kremlin’s crusade to protect ‘traditional values’. At the same time, it was launched to protect Russia from the “anti-family” ideology of Western countries, the lawmakers said. People believe that gender reassignment is a ‘satanic process’.

It started decades ago
Decades ago, LGBTQ+ beliefs began to be eradicated in Russia While President Putin espoused the belief in preserving ‘traditional family values’ supported by the Church. In 2013, the Kremlin banned “non-traditional sexual relations” between minors. At the same time, in 2020, Putin declared same-sex marriage illegal and banned its promotion.
