This beautiful village in Meghalaya is nestled in the lap of nature.
The people of this village are not known by name, but by sound.
Travel to Meghalaya: There is a village in Meghalaya where people have tunes instead of names. This village is Kong Thang and also known as Whistling Village. Before reaching here one had to trek 8 to 10 km. The good thing is that now motorable roads have been constructed here and there is no need to trek anymore. One can see the nature here and meet and talk to the people of a particular community living here. Here the tone is used to call people, not their names. Let’s know about this unique village in India.
Sur name tradition
This unique village is known as Jingrawai Labi for its unique heritage. After birth a mother gives her baby the sounds eoow or ooeeee etc. This sound becomes the child’s identity. Apart from this, the mother has to find another tune for the child so that this tune is only in the child’s name. Another thing here is that people talk to each other only through sound. According to the villagers, one’s name is not given to another. Every person’s name is different. The name of the tune is also of two types. One for summoning people and the other for warding off evil spirits. Villagers have two names, one regular and one as a song.
