Wimbledon 2021: Roger Federer loses in quarterfinals, Sania-Bopanna challenge ends

New Delhi, Hubert Hurkaz pulled off the biggest upset of the Wimbledon tennis tournament on Wednesday by beating eight-time champion Roger Federer in straight sets but world number one Novak Djokovic eased into the semi-finals. Federer, who turns 40 next month, was on course to win his 21st Grand Slam title but never came close. Poland’s 14th seed Harkaz defeated him 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-0 to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam event for the first time. We tell you that the Indian challenge at Wimbledon is also over. Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza lost in three sets in mixed doubles.

Bopanna’s serve and net play were very strong but Sania’s serve was under pressure. The match was interrupted by rain, with the 14th-seeded pair of Jean-Julien Roger and Andreja Klepak winning 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 after taking a one-set lead. Sania hasn’t played much competitive tennis since her comeback, which she struggled with on her serve. This will be Sania’s last tournament before the Tokyo Olympics where she will compete with Ankita Raina in the women’s doubles event. The defeat also ended India’s challenge at a grass court Grand Slam.

    Djokovic reached the semi-finals
World number one Novak Djokovic defeated Hungarian unseeded Marten Fuchovic 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 on Center Court. This is the 10th time he has reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon. He entered the semifinals for the 41st time in a Grand Slam tournament. Djokovic easily earned points in the quarter-finals and is now looking to equal Federer and Rafael Nadal’s record by winning his 20th Grand Slam title. The 34-year-old from Serbia has won 19 Grand Slam matches this season and is on track to complete the calendar Grand Slam. No male player has accomplished this since Rod Lever (1969).
