    Tokyo Olympics: Sumit Nagal to play in singles, Yuki Bhambri ruled out due to injury


    New Delhi. There is good news for Indian tennis lovers that Sumit Nagal will be able to play in the men’s singles category at the Tokyo Olympics. Tennis Federation of India confirmed the matter to AITA. Hailing from Jhajjar, Haryana, Nagal’s ranking was 144 on June 14, which was the basis for direct entry into the Tokyo Olympics. Prajnesh Guneswaran missed the ticket to Tokyo as he was ranked 148th. At the same time, Yuki Bhambri has been sidelined due to injury.

    Tennis entries close a few hours later. Many athletes have withdrawn from the Olympics due to strict protocols and fear of corona infection. An AITA official said, “We have received a mail from the ITF that Sumit can play in Tokyo. He asked for their details. We have started the process.

    Yuki Bhambri, entered ranked 127th and will miss Tokyo due to recent surgery on his right knee in the United States. Bhambri told PTI, ‘I will not play in the Olympics.’

    If the 23-year-old Nagal is able to play, it remains to be seen whether he can land the doubles with Rohan Bopanna. Bopanna and Divij Saran are yet to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Bopanna and Divij have a combined ranking of 113 and are fifth in the options list. India can also field a team in mixed doubles in Nagal. Currently Ankita Raina and Sania Mirza are playing women’s doubles
