Tokyo Olympics: Novak Djokovic throws racket in the stands, over the net and at photographers, watch video

Tokyo. World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic came to the Olympics with dreams of fulfilling the ‘Golden Slam’, but will return empty-handed from Tokyo after losing the bronze medal match. The Serbian lost to Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 in the bronze medal match. During the match, Djokovic lost his cool several times and vented his anger on the racket.

Djokovic lost for the third time in less than 24 hours. Alexander Zverev crushed Djokovic’s dream of becoming the first man to complete the ‘Golden Slam’ by defeating Djokovic in the Olympic men’s singles semi-finals on Friday. After that, he had to face defeat in the semifinals of mixed doubles. Winning Olympic gold along with four Grand Slams in the same year is called a Golden Slam. Steffi Graf (1988) is the only tennis player to achieve this feat.

Djokovic’s frustration was predictable when, after saving a match point in the second set, he threw his racket towards the stands after Busta failed to block a shot during a long rally in the third set. After two games, when Busta broke his serve, he hit the net again with his racket. He then picked up the racket and threw it at the photographers.

Busta asked the umpire for a penalty point

The chair umpire also warned Djokovic after throwing his racket over the net, but Busta demanded a penalty point from the umpire as it was the second incident of racket anger. However, the umpire did not warn Djokovic after the first incident.

The mixed doubles pair of Djokovic and Nina Stojanovic lost in the semifinals on Friday. He then faced Australian mixed doubles duo Ash Barty and John Pearce in the bronze medal match, but withdrew from the match due to a left shoulder injury. The mixed doubles bronze medal went to the Australian pair. Djokovic has won just one medal at the Olympics. He won a bronze medal in Beijing (2008).
