    Tokyo Olympics 2020: Sumit Nagal creates history, becomes third Indian tennis player to win a match at Olympics


    Tokyo. Sumit Nagal defeated Denis Istomin in three sets at the Tokyo Games to become the third Indian tennis player to win the men’s singles event at the Olympics in 25 years of history. Nagal defeated Istomin 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 in a match of two hours and 34 minutes. He will now face world number two Daniil Medvedev in the second round.

    Zeeshan Ali defeated Victo Caballero of Paraguay in the men’s singles tennis event at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. After that, Leander Paes won the bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics defeating Brazil’s Fernando Meligeni. No Indian player has won a singles match at the Olympics since Paes. At the 2012 London Olympics, Somdev Devavarman and Vishnu Vardhan lost in the first round.

    Nagal was not in form before the Olympics

    Nagal was not in the best form before the Olympics. He had a chance to break Istomin’s serve in the sixth game of the first set, which he missed. He broke Istomin’s serve and won the first set.

    He led 4-1 in the second set as well, but the pressure got to him and he couldn’t save his serve. Istomin took the match to a tiebreaker. Nagal maintained his momentum in the final set but will now face Australian Open runner-up Medvedev, who defeated Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik 6-4, 7-6.
