    Tokyo Olympics 2020: Indian challenge in tennis ends with Sumit Nagal’s defeat


    Tokyo. India’s Sumit Nagal crashed out of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 in men’s singles second round with a straight sets loss to Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) world number two Daniil Medvedev. With this, India’s challenge in tennis ended.
    The world number 160 defeated second seed Medvedev 2-6, 1-6 in an hour and six minute match. Medvedev broke serve twice in the first set and three times in the second set.

    Sumit became the third Indian to win a singles

    Nagal defeated Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 in the first round to become the third Indian tennis player to win the men’s singles event in 25 years at the Olympics. Zeeshan Ali defeated Victo Caballero of Paraguay in the men’s singles tennis event at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. After that, Leander Paes won the bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics defeating Brazil’s Fernando Meligeni.

    Earlier in women’s doubles, veterans Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina were knocked out by Ukrainian twin sisters Lyudmila Kitchenok and Nadia Kitchenok 0-6, 7-6, 10-8 in the first round.
