Thane. Police in Thane on Friday arrested a 226-year-old man for allegedly strangling his 25-year-old wife to death in Ulnesnagar and later burning her body inside her home. It’s on fire. The arrested accused was identified as Suraj Anand Kharat, who also lived with his wife Sushila Sahebrao Nikalje at Gaikwadpara in Ulhasnagar. Police said Kharat suspects having an illicit affair with his wife, which led to a quarrel between the two. During one such fight, Kharat strangled him with a shovel and killed him.
“It happened instantly and the woman died when she regained consciousness,” the official said, according to an Indian Express report. In such a situation, he thought that he would confuse the police by burning the body as it would make it difficult to identify. He further added that the police may have thought that his wife had committed suicide. Nikalaj’s body was found Aug. 22 after neighbors complained of a foul odor from the house. After the complaint, Shivaji Nagar police station was informed and a team went to the spot.
According to the report, Inspector Mahesh Tarde said the woman’s body was sent to JJ Hospital for postmortem and doctors said she was strangled to death before setting it on fire. A case of murder and destruction of evidence was filed at Shivaji Nagar police station. Police then searched the neighborhood but no one recognized him because he had recently moved there. “Later a woman was found who revealed her identity and also gave Kharat’s phone number,” an official said.
Kharat worked as a waiter. Police came to know that he was supposed to come near Kamgarnagar in Badlapur. An official said: ‘We set a trap and arrested him. He has pleaded guilty.
