A few years ago, when Bhavish Agarwal and the illustrious Bhati Olar thought of leaving their jobs with a package of lakhs of rupees, the family would make fun of him. Today everyone is saluting, and this company is a company worth crores of rupees. Let’s not know the success story behind this …
How about Ola
In 2007, two young students, Bhavish Agarwal and Ankit Bhati, from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, set off for Ratnagiri in coastal Maharashtra on a 335 km bicycle trip from their campus in Powai. He was fond of traveling. Once, when he rented a car from Bangalore for a weekend trip to Bandipur, the driver stopped midway in Mysore and demanded more money. An immobile future covered the rest of the distance by bus. He then drew the attention of this app based startup (OLA) and started working on it. Ankit joined him and the two formed Ola Cab in 2011.
Although Bhavish and Ankit have given up their grand cycling tour, a journey has been very successful for them – their business tour. A word that sounds like the word ‘hello’ in Spanish. Ola was first started by Bhavish under the name olatrips.com, a portal that helps in booking car and hotel for outbound travel.

..And friendships are transformed into partnerships
Bhavish met Ankit on his first day at IIT. Their house was next to each other and Ankit knocked on the door of the future to introduce himself. Enthusiastic and enterprising, the young students dreamed of starting their own company together. Hungry for real-world experience, he participated in multiple extracurricular assignments, including a freelance coding project. Bhavish recalls that he did not receive money for the first project he worked on, but instead what he gained was invaluable – an experience that taught him the basics of real business and lifelong friendships with wealth.

Everyone has had fun before
When Bhavish, who works at Microsoft Research, tried to quit his job, his family and friends mocked him, saying that quitting was a useless idea, but Bhavish wanted to be one. “When I started working, my parents thought I was going to be a travel agent,” said Bhavish. It was hard to convince them, but when Ola Cabs first got funding, they believed in my startup. We tell you that Ola has taken its place in many cities today. The company is doing business worth thousands of crores of rupees.
