Thiruvananthapuram. Shaju Zakaria, the second husband of alleged Kerala serial killer Jolly Joseph, filed for divorce from her in Kozhikode court on Monday. The husband cited cruelty for his criminal record and separation from her. In the appeal, he said he did not know about his past and that he could no longer be with Jolly, who is accused of killing six members of his family. This includes his first wife and children. It is believed that he killed them with cyanide in their food for 14 years.
After killing his wife and child, Jolly married his first husband’s cousin Zakaria in 2011. He is currently in jail. School teacher Zakaria is the main witness in the two murders where Jolly is accused. Two years ago, 49-year-old Jolly cut his wrist in prison, but prison authorities rushed him to hospital.
Jolly was arrested in 2019 along with three others on charges of murdering six members of her family. The Special Investigation Team (SIT), which investigated the sensational case, filed chargesheets in six murder cases last year.
The SIT arrested him for 14 years for killing six members of the Ponnamatham family in Kudathai (Kozhikode district). The killings, which took place between 2002 and 2016, were planned and carried out with precision. The other accused are M Mathew, Prachi Kumar and K Manoj. K Manoj is a former CPI (M) leader who was expelled from the party in 2019.
