They demanded that a clear warning be issued on such packaged food items as soon as possible.

Experts say that if the country is to be protected from the great danger of disease, it is very important to start health warnings on such products immediately.

    To make these products more palatable and addictive, they are high in fat, salt and sugar, which significantly increase the risk of cancer, heart disease and liver disease.

    Demand for implementation of caution on packaged food items

In the public interest nutrition advocacy (NAPI), the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM), the Pediatric and Adolescent Nutrition Society, the Epidemiology Foundation of India, and the Breastfeeding Promotion in India.

    During a webinar on the subject, Neha Khandpur, a nutritionist at the University of So Paolo in Brazil and a teacher at the Center for Nutrition, demonstrated the effectiveness of such warnings by quoting several studies from around the world. He said that based on research done in different countries, it is clear that warnings that provide clear information to people about salt, sugar and fat are very effective. Such warnings help people to choose good products for health.

    The right to health is a basic human right
    Dr Sunila Garg, president of the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM), said the right to health is a fundamental right of every individual. Also the health of the young generation is the wealth of the nation. Therefore, it is necessary that the state and central governments introduce cautionary labeling rules on the packaging of harmful food products and high sugar, salt or fatty beverages.

    Rapid increase in consumption of unhealthy foods
    A member of the Prime Minister’s Nutrition Council and convener of the Public Interest Nutrition Advocacy (NAPI), Dr. Arun Gupta said the consumption of unhealthy food items has increased rapidly. If it is not stopped immediately, India will join the ranks of obese countries like Britain and America in the next decade. Until these rules are made mandatory, the industry will not follow it. Because their purpose is just to gain.
