    Tokyo Olympics: Argentina lost to Australia in the first match


    Sapporo (Japan). Two-time Olympic men’s soccer champions Argentina beat Australia 2-0 in the opening match of the Tokyo Games on Thursday. In the first match Argentina team (ARG vs AUS) had to face a miserable defeat. The Australian football team is playing in the Olympics for the first time since 2008. Legendary footballer Lionel Messi is not part of the Argentina team at the Olympic Games.

    Aussies led by Deng took the lead in the 14th minute through Lachlan Wells. Marco Tillio scored the team’s second goal in the 80th minute just one minute after coming on as a substitute. In the 84th minute of the match, Adolfo Giac hit the ball through Patio’s pass but Australian goalkeeper Glover blocked his effort. Later the Australian team won by the same margin. Australia topped Group C ahead of Egypt and Spain.

    Spain drew goalless in another match. The Argentina football team won gold medals at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. Australia’s best performance came in 1992 when it finished fourth.
