The AIFF will recommend Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the highest sports honor for Sunil Chhetri

New Delhi. Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri will be nominated for the country’s highest sporting honour, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. The All India Football Federation is preparing to recommend his name. However, the related documents have not been handed over yet. This information was reported with reference to news agency ANI.

Chhetri had created a special record in his own name this month. He is the second highest goalscorer among active players behind Argentine striker Lionel Messi. He scored 2 goals against Bangladesh in the combined qualifiers of FIFA World Cup 2022 and Asian Cup 2023 and single-handedly led the team to victory and took his tally of international goals to 74.

Two days ago, Messi surpassed Chhetri by scoring two goals against Bolivia in the Copa America Cup. Messi now has 75 goals. Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo holds the record for most international goals. He equaled Iran’s Ali Dei’s record of 109 goals. Chhetri also received the Padma Shri award in 2019. He is the sixth footballer to receive this honour. Chhetri is the second Indian after Vaichung Bhutia to play 100 international matches.

For the first time in 2020, five players were given the playing title. It featured Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma, table tennis players Manika Batra, Vinesh Phogat, Rani Rampal and para-athlete Mariappan Thangavelu.
