Men. The Indian football team won the SAIF Championship title for the eighth time by defeating Nepal 3-0 in the final on Saturday. Indian captain Sunil Chhetri also performed well, scoring in the 49th minute to equal Lionel Messi’s 80 international goals. Apart from Chhetri, Suresh Singh and Sahal Abdul Samad scored for India in the second half. Suresh scored in the 50th minute and Samad in the 90th minute.
In the first half of the final match, India won the ball control but could not score. Chhetri put India ahead with a goal within minutes of the second half. One minute later, Suresh doubled India’s lead. This is India’s first title for head coach Eger Stimak. He became the third foreign coach after Jerry Pesek (1993) and Stephen Constantine (2015) to lead the Indian team to the title.
Chhetri put India ahead with a goal from the right side of Pritam Kotal. A minute later, the Indians attacked again and destroyed Nepal’s defense. Suresh scored this goal. Manveer Singh also came close to scoring in the 52nd minute but his left foot shot was blocked by the Nepalese goalkeeper. Samad scored the third goal for India in the 90th minute.
