One thing the covid 19 pandemic has taught all the victims this time is that if a cry for help comes from the heart, it reaches the heart. The second time the corona outbreak occurred, many people lost their lives, but the shock of the first shock was a little more prepared this time. Due to non-shooting in South India, many people lost their jobs. Eminent producer-director Mani Ratnam and his friend Jayendra Panchapakesan of Cube Cinemas take a background on the matter. He decided that he would make a film to raise money and thus came up with the idea of an anthology called “Navras”. Mani Ratnam’s company Madras Films entered the OTT world with this anthology. Some of the 9 stories are well made and some are generic. Mani Ratnam’s company’s digital debut did not quite serve the taste.
There are 9 rasas of acting. If a film is made on each juice, a compilation can be made and the audience is firmly grasped, although defining this compilation is a difficult task. There are no threads in any story that connect. Everything is a movie in itself. If something is normal, no one can see it. Some stories may have remained in the mind of the writer-director, the audience could not understand. This is the problem of super-scholastic directors. He himself gets excited about the story and doesn’t think the film is meant for the audience, not just for the director’s self-indulgence. Navrasa’s biggest flaw is that the directors made the film with the aim of impressing Mani Ratnam and completely forgot about the audience. How did Mani, an MBA from Mumbai’s Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, forget that movies are made to entertain the audience?
The first story is directed by Bejoy Nambiar. His first film Shaitan and later Farhan Akhtar, Amitabh Bachchan starrer Wazir brought him much fame. His film “Dushman” based on “Karuna” Raas stars talented Vijay Sethupathi and Praveen Revathi in lead roles. Revathi plays the role of a wife who hasn’t even spoken to her husband Prakash Raj for years. Prakash Raj is a bank manager who refuses to pass a loan to Vijay Sethupathi’s brother and commits suicide due to this. An enraged Vijay Sethupathi, to avenge his brother’s murder, goes to Prakash Raj’s house and kills him. The plot was fine, but the climax was so silly that Mani Ratnam didn’t think the original idea of the story. Vijay reaches the temple looking for Revati to apologize for his mistake and Revati takes the blame for the whole incident. The story is over. Where does the sympathy come from? How was compassion shown? What was the act that evokes pity? It’s a straightforward revenge story. Had it not been for Prakash Raj in the roles of Vijay, Revathi and Swami, there would have been no mercy for the filmmaker.
The second story is based on Priyadarshan’s film “Summer of 92” Comedy Raas starring famous comedian Yogi Babu in the lead role. As the school completes 100 years, Yogi Babu comes as an alumnus who has now become a well-known film comedian. Gives the customary speech and reminisces about the old days. What is the comedy in this? Nedumadi Venu, the then principal of the school, is looking for a relationship for her daughter Ramya. His daughter is bringing home a Christian priest’s dog, so Yogi Babu is asked to keep the dog away from the house to discuss the relationship. The dog escapes from Yogi Babu’s grasp, falls into the gutter and comes home and sweeps himself in front of all the guests and throws all the dirt on them and the marriage ends. Humor is at the core of this story. The humor in it is worth considering. The actor, who plays Yogi Babu’s teenage character with a heavy body, is called Pig, Fat and Key. Where is the joke in this? This is Priyadarshan’s next performance after Hungama 2, and it seems there is no magic left between them.
The third story project Agni is based on Amazing Raas and its director Karthik Naren who is considered as an emerging director of Tamil cinema and is soon directing a film with Dhanush. This film is well made. It is a story of science and Aurobindo Swamy has single-handedly painted this story in his own way. The conversation begins with the Mayan and Sumerian civilizations. Time Space is a device that goes back in time to depict the evils of people’s habit of playing with time. There are references to Puranas in the film, then Aurobindo’s character is named Vishnu, his wife is named Lakshmi and Krishna comes to meet him. The villain of the story is Kalki, who according to Puranas can bring destruction. Being scientific, the mood of the story is beyond common understanding, but the film is made in a very simple way.
The fourth story is director Vasanth’s “Payasam” based on Vivats Rasa starring Aditi Balan, Rohini and Delhi Ganesh. The way society is scarred by superstition and narrow-mindedness has given birth to a grudge-hatred in people’s minds. A Tauji (Delhi Ganesh) of unorthodox ideology threatens to take his widowed daughter to his nephew’s house for his daughter’s marriage. Tauji’s mind is jealous, envious and dirty about this marriage. Touji is respected, he wears a new coat but he is still upset. In one scene, they are walking home and sometimes they bump into a car, sometimes a stool or something similar. The director seems to have used her poor eyesight as a symbol. Aditi Balan plays the role of a widow and she does it beautifully. Facing the eyes of other people in the society, when he reaches the wedding, the way the other guests present look at him and the expression on Aditi’s face is his maturity. Tamil wedding ritual music and original musical instruments played for weddings are mesmerizing. The film doesn’t get its message right.
If you want to see a touching story, you can see the story of Pancham Rasa i.e. Calm Rasa. Super hit director Karthik Subbaraj managed to make a little impact in this story of just 28 minutes. Karthik has previously directed films like Pizza, Jigarthanda and Jagme Thandiram. Another superhit director Gautham Vasudev Menon is working as an actor in the film. In this short story of the LTTE insurgents, the prospect of an encounter begins in the village. In a small group of rebels, a man’s brother (Bobby Simha) is killed in a battle. He meets a little boy who asks him to save his brother. When the soldier reaches there, he discovers that the child’s brother is a small dog. He saves the dog and is shot. He was also shot, his comrade fire covering. After a while the firing stopped and he brought the dog to safety. After first aid, he stood on a mound and thanked the enemy soldiers for not firing accurately because of the dog. Then he gets shot and dies. It is difficult to understand what the director and writer Vivek Harshan wanted to convey in this story of peace, but still the film is good.
Actor Arvind Swamy also entered the world of directing through this collection and presented the story “Raudram” by Roudra Rasa. This story is most effective and leaves a deep impression on the audience. Poverty-stricken Arul (Sreeram) lives with his mother and younger sister. The dreams are very big but those dreams cannot be fulfilled by earning a small amount and cleaning the house of the mother. Dissatisfaction grew in Arul’s mind. One day a mother goes shopping and eating good food with her children. Arul goes to play football with new shoes and after winning the best player cash prize goes to give this money to his mother, when he finds his mother in bed with the owner of the house. Then she realizes that her mother has started prostitution. Arul’s hatred leads to violence and he almost becomes a professional criminal. Time changes and mother is now on her deathbed, Arul calls his sister who is now a senior police officer and deals very strictly with criminals. Rudra form of both is seen in the picture. All the actors have done a good job. Sadly, no sympathy is awakened for any artist.
Another tale of confusion is R Rathindran Prasad’s film Inmoyi which is a tale of fear. It stars Siddharth and Parvathy in lead roles. An attempt has been made to present the story of Jinn by making a story of Muslim environment. strange story Basically a revenge story. But what was there to be afraid of, he did not understand. There was nothing in any scene that could scare the viewer to close their eyes. Even Siddharth and Parvati could not save the poor story and the same thing happened. Ashtam Rasa is Veer Rasa and its story is written by Mani Ratnam himself and directed by Sarjun KM. Mani Ratnam’s story is disappointing. An army officer (Atharva) shoots and arrests a Naxal (Kishore). While being taken to the army headquarters, the Naxalite’s health deteriorated due to bleeding. Contrary to instructions, the officer brings him to the hospital from where the Naxal escapes. The story is over. If there was no scene of Army office wife Muthulakshmi (Anjali) in this film, the film would have been dull. Movies are very boring.
Akheri Raas is Shringar Raas directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon and titled as Guitar Kambi Mela Nindru. According to the literature read, makeup is derived from the person’s makeup. There is love in this film, nothing like makeup is seen. Suriya got the role of a great singer and he sang while playing the guitar and soon won a Grammy Award too. Their love story is shown in flashbacks, which has led to emotion in their music. What was the makeup? Find again. The songs of the film are good and that’s good. Neither Suriya nor Pragya Martin are weak in acting but the director should have worked hard to choose the right story. Direction is also good. Most of the films in ‘Navaras’ have no juice. It is being said and explained that there are nine rasas full of navaras, whereas there is nothing like that. Yes, “boredom” is full of juice. Because of which Mani Ratnam’s name will be bad. This is a very bad compilation. You can avoid seeing it.
