Good Luck Jerry Review: Director Siddharth Sengupta’s film was studied in Diwakar Banerjee’s school ‘Oe Lucky Lucky Oe’ and hence when you watch ‘Good Luck Jerry’, you get glimpses of Diwakar’s comedy sense. Disney+ Hotstar’s new release, ‘Good Luck Jerry’ is an entertaining black comedy starring Janhvi Kapoor. Which you can enjoy watching with the whole family, if you ignore some swear words. In 2018, Tamil film director Nelson wrote and directed his first film – Kolamavu Nightingale. Nayantara was the heroine of the film. The film was a super hit. Won some awards too. Good Luck Jerry is the official Hindi remake of the same Tamil film Kolamavu Nightingale. The film is a bit long, but the film is entertaining despite the small scenes. Looking at this picture, Janhvi Kapoor is becoming a very good actress. It can be assumed that this film will help her career a lot. Those who watched the Tamil original will also love Janhvi Kapoor’s performance.
The story of Good Luck Jerry is written in Tamil by director Nelson Dilip Kumar. The actress was so impressed by the script of Nayanthara (Tamil film’s most expensive and successful actress) that she immediately said yes and immediately gave her dates. It was Hindiized by Pankaj Matta and what a feat he has done. Everything takes place in Chennai in the original film and Punjab in Good Luck Jerry. Pankaj has portrayed the characters well in the regional setting. Only Janhvi and her sister Chhaya aka Cheri (Samatha Sudiksha) and Janhvi’s mother Saravati (Mita Vashisht) are said to be from Bihar family, all other characters are from Punjab and are excellent examples of Punjabiness. Often little things like this make a huge impact on a remake. Pankaj made a huge impact in Good Luck Jerry. Jaya aka Jerry (Jhanvi Kapoor) works in a massage parlor to support the family. The younger sister studies cherries and mother makes and sells momos in the market. Jerry began working for a local druggist to treat his mother’s cancer. Each time somehow he evades the police. The wheel of fortune turns and the situation is such that Jerry has to carry 100 kg of cocaine under the nose of the police. Fighting cancer for his life, his family’s life, and his mother’s, Jerry uses his brains to take on the drug dealers of Punjab, first fighting among themselves and later with the help of the police, drug dealers, and gangsters. Who is Marva? The ending is good, but before that there are so many ups and downs in the story that the story remains tied up.
This is the fourth-fifth film of Janhvi Kapoor’s career. The journey from the first film Dhadak to Good Luck Jerry was not difficult but there was one big question which he had to answer to act well with Janhvi. Good luck answering that Jerry. What a great performance by Janhbir. Completely stripped of the glamour, she is a Bihar girl, the daughter of a massage parlor in Punjab who earns money by being a drug mule and treating her mother, a role almost inhabited by Janhvi. Punjab, Bihar’s drug mule, Alia Bhatt also made Udta Punjab. Janhvi looks easy. He has fear on his face but the fight to survive has given him some courage and the strength to run his own mind. Many scenes seem to have been written with Janhvi in mind.
Comedy timing is not inherited but Janhvi has turned that too. Mita Vashishta is the well of acting, from which water gushes again and again. She acts fiercely with great timing and fight with the girl like a true Bihari mother. The fight scene with Janhvi, the scene of the nurse wearing her gown in the hospital, the scene where the neighbors line up on her… there are many scenes where Mita is in the scene and the scene is not hers. Experience this. Deepak Dobriyal is amazing as Janhvi’s one-sided lover. Why did God make me so handsome, that when he talks about himself, he destroys. Jaswant Singh Dalal as Timmy is a complete riot. She falls in love with Jerry part time and follows his advice and kills two of his men. When she comes in and meets Jerry, love and confusion are visible in her eyes. A filmmaker by profession and a diploma in acting from FTII, Yashwant was also seen in Anushka Sharma’s NH 10, albeit in a minor role.
Music is composed by Parag Chhabra and this is his biggest project till date. Worked on this project with full dedication. Mitti-related lyricist Raj Shekhar has penned two or three songs, Toh Kya Kamal. Paracetamol and Jhand Or have the potential to be popular but due to their OTT release, they are likely to be seen more, less likely. Editors Prakash Chandra Sahu and Zubin Sheikh did not let the story go astray. The film mainly deals with crime, so no parallel track is made so big. Deepak Dobriyal and Janhveer’s Geet, the one-sided love story of younger sister Cheri and her crazy lover, Janhvi and Yashwant, colorful style by Sushant Singh. Everything is there but the main story is Jerry becoming a drug mule i.e. taking drugs from here to there and treating his mother with the money he gets. Thanks to both director and editor along with screenwriter for considering the story as hero. This rarely happens in movies. How director Siddharth convinced Janhvi to play such a glamorous character is a mystery. How Janhvi agreed to become a massage parlor girl will also remain a mystery.
The film is entertaining. The film captivates the audience. The songs are also at the right volume and good. Except for a couple of places, the pace of the film is well kept. It is a joy that such films are being made now. Watching ‘Good Luck Jerry’, one should support such films and appreciate Janhvi Kapoor for deciding to do this film and playing her character with complete conviction. Jerry could just be Janhvi.
