Chehre Review: ‘Chehre’ Is Behind Friedrich Durenmatt’s Novel – ‘A Dangerous Game’

Cinematographer Vinod Pradhan, Editor Bodhaditya Banerjee, Casting Director Mukesh Chhabra. Based on these three names, the film can be discussed. Then you add Amitabh Bachchan, Raghubir Yadav, Anu Kapoor, Emraan Hashmi to it. The buzz of the picture is confirmed. Now take Rhea Chakraborty who was harassed by the media for a minor role in this film. Your movie is sure to be popular among the general public. The film starts, seems very nice film. Snowy plains, winding roads, cool cars. For half an hour, characters keep coming and the film continues. As the actual story of the film unfolds, you are reminded of Friedrich Durenmatt’s 1956 novel ‘A Dangerous Game’. After that you lose interest in movies.

Writer-director Rumi Jaffrey’s acclaimed film Chehre recently released on Amazon Prime Video. Although the audience rejected this film in cinema halls, the reason was not the film, but the film’s actress Rhea Chakraborty. 90% of the film was shot in a house. Emraan Hashmi, the CEO of an advertising agency, takes refuge in a snow-ravaged house where 4 retired men – a judge, a public prosecutor, another lawyer and an executioner – play ‘court of law’ with house guests and make the guests criminals. He was judged.

Overconfident or overconfident, a person in the advertising world falls into the clutches of these old lawyers and it comes to the fore that this advertising agency CEO has to admit his mistake or his guilt. The judge found him guilty. The entire incident has been captured on the CCTV installed in the house and the hangman is waiting for his turn to hang the criminal. In Frederick’s novel, the criminal commits suicide, while Emraan Hashmi slips on ice and falls into a ditch.

In fact, this film is very heavy to watch. At one point it seems that the film might end if two or three actors of Gun Nikal shoot each other. It is a matter of thinking how interesting it would have been in the novel as well as the story. A judge, two lawyers, an executioner. Friendship has a fundamental dimension. Judges and lawyers are so ignorant that Hampiala, apart from being human, do not address each other as ‘Ken Bay’. There is a servant convicted of blood. The same judge who gave his verdict was the same public prosecutor and the criminal’s lawyer. The executioner could do nothing for him as he was only sent to jail. There are maids too. who also paints. Laughs like a fool at what he thinks is innocent. In his spare time he looks up to Emraan Hashmi.

The setting of the story is fictional, so excuse me, it’s understandable. Rumi himself has written about many hit films but how did he miss this time? Another famous writer-director Ranjit Kapoor supported him. The two wrote the story, screenplay and dialogue together. Throughout the script, there is a contest of ‘Ke mor saan saalap marega na sher throega’.

The story takes 45 minutes to move from first gear to second gear Emraan Hashmi does a great job this time. Amitabh Bachchan was taken to cook for the entire film and he made the mistake of carrying the film’s crucifix on his bowed shoulders. At one place, he speaks alone for 7-8 minutes and narrates a show reel of decisions taken by Indian courts. It was interesting to listen to, not good at all. Annu Kapoor, younger brother of the film’s writer Ranjit Kapoor, is also in the film. Seeing and hearing the quintessentially Punjabi Annu Kapoor speak Punjabi as Sardar is like a hammer to the brain. Raghubir Yadav is seen playing the flute in a new way and letting his talent go. Rhea Chakraborty and Siddharth Kapoor’s character in the film was like a domestic help, but it wouldn’t have made a difference. What was needed to show the generosity and honesty of the four legal characters.

Not everything in the movie is bad. The camera magic of senior and award-winning cinematographer Vinod Pradhan is a must-see. The chilly valleys, snow, wooden houses and every character’s different shades of clothing in the frame is a delightful experience. Noted Bengali film editor Bodhaditya Banerjee, who also edited Amitabh Bachchan’s courtroom drama ‘Pink’, is also commendable. The scenes in the film are intricately scripted, so Bodhaditya also struggled to create thrills in the film. He shot different scenes in different locations in the same house and worked hard to create harmony between them. A big salute should be given to casting director Mukesh Chhabra. Along with Amitabh Bachchan, Emraan Hashmi and Dhriman Chatterjee, seasoned actors like Anu Kapoor and Raghubir Yadav have been brought together. Siddhant Kapoor and Rhea Chakraborty probably got a place because of friendship.

Rumi Jaffrey has written or directed most of the comedy or clean films so far. His face is not a film of his mood. This move was bold although it did not prove very correct. The film is boring because the dialogues spoil the film. You can watch the film for Amitabh and Emraan Hashmi’s performances.
