BOISE, Idaho: Levi Williams ran for 200 yards and four touchdowns and passed 127 yards and led Wyoming to a 52-38 win over Kent State at the famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Tuesday.
Williams, who set the career-best single-game racing performance, set the Potato Bowl record for the fastest touchdown and named the games MVP.
Kent State (7-7), in its fifth ball game in school history, went ahead with a 17-7 lead and a 24-21 lead at halftime, but could not hold back the relentless offensive attack of the Golden Flash Wymings.
Wyming (7-6) scored 21 points in a row early in the second half, including Williams’ 27 and 80-yard runs, creating a 42-24 lead that was much higher for Kent State.
Wyoming senior linebacker Chad Muma and Buttkus Award finalist did not disappoint in his college final, leading the Cowboys in defense with 13 tackles and a half bag.
The Cowboys set a potato bowl team racing record with 404 yards, while the two teams ran 723 yards together, a potato bowl record.
Wyoming: The Cowboys quarterback position has been the tug-of-war between Shawn Chambers and Williams over the past two seasons. But Williams, who was named a starter in the middle of the season, will have a suffocating position in the run-up to spring practice.
Kent State: Golden Flash’s 656-yard offense had no problem moving football. However, after holding Wyming to a 216-yard offense in the first half, the Kent States defense weakened in the second half, with much more physical Wyming being pushed around by the offensive line.
Kent State: Fourth-year coach Shawn Lewis returned most of the offensive line the following season, something the Golden Flash has not been able to do without a four-year losing season since the 1950s. Leading Russian Marquez Cooper and top receiver Dante Cephas, who have combined for 2,294 yards of total offense this year, will return for their junior season. Colin Schlie is expected to take over quarterback after senior Dustin Krum finished all his qualifications. The defense presents a big challenge for Lewis, who returns only four players but includes top tackler Dean Clarke.
Wyming: As Craig Bohl enters his ninth season at Wyoming, he will have to combine a whole new offensive line and return only one starter. But his defensive unit returns eight starters, yet a huge hole has to be filled in the departure of Mumas.
