Tokyo has confirmed the first case of the omicron form of the coronavirus in a traveler from the United States. A friend of the infected man, whom he saw shortly after arriving, tested positive after going to a football game.
Separately, the health ministry announced Thursday that one of its quarantine officials had also tested positive for the Omicron variant. New findings confirm Omicron Case 34A in Japan The Omicron patient in Tokyo tested negative for Covid-19 after arriving at the airport on December 8, but the next day he developed a fever during his self-isolation at home and tested positive for the virus, the health ministry said in a statement. His samples were further analyzed and confirmed as an Omicron variant on Thursday.
The person he met soon after returning also developed fever and other symptoms. Before the positive test, he played a football game with 10 people, including his family and colleagues. The ministry has called on Tokyo to test spectators at Sunday’s soccer match in Kawasaki.
