Covid-19: Egypt reported the first three cases of the Omicron variant

Egyptian health authorities say they have identified the country’s first case of the highly contagious omicron form of the coronavirus. The health ministry said in a statement late on Friday that three of the 26 passengers tested positive for coronavirus at Cairo International Airport had been found with variants. It was not immediately clear where the three came from.

The local Masrawi news outlet reported that the three were among the South African travelers.

The ministry said two of the infected people showed no symptoms, and a third suffered mild symptoms. The three were taken to a Cairo hospital, it said.

Authorities on Friday reported more than 900 new coronavirus cases and 43 deaths in the past 24 hours.

A total of 373,500 cases have been reported in Egypt since the outbreak, with 21,277 deaths.
