    Lala Amarnath Jayanti: The first captain of independent India who first dusted off Pakistan

    New Delhi. On this day in 11111 (September 11), Lala Amarnath, the first player to score a Test century for India, was born. Lala Amarnath is known for his charismatic play in the history of Indian cricket. In 1333, Amarnath made his Test debut against England (India v England) at the Bombay Gymkhana. He scored 118 in this match, which was the first Test century of any Indian. Amarnath was also the first Test captain of independent India. He led India to victory in the first official Test series in 1952-53 against Pakistan (India vs Pakistan) under his captaincy. India won the series 2-1.

    Lala Amarnath bowled with a very accurate line length, he was the only bowler in the world who had the credit of hitting Sir Don Bradman. In 1947, Amarnath hit Bradman during the Brisbane Test. Amarnath took 5 wickets in Test cricket and 3 wickets in first-class cricket.

    12 years away from international cricket due to controversy
    Due to the controversy, Lala Amarnath could not play international cricket for 12 years. Indeed, during a visit to England in 1936, Maharaja Kumar of Captain Vizianagaram controversially deported Lala Amarnath ‘due to irregularities’. Amarnath alleged that he was expelled for political reasons. Lala Amarnath then had to wait 12 years to play the next Test. During this time, he continued to collect runs and then in 1946 he got a place in Team India for the England tour.

    Lala Amarnath died on 5 August 2000 at the age of 88. His sons Surinder, Mahendra and Rajinder also took cricket as their father. Surinder has played Test matches for India and Mohinder has played 69 Test matches.
