West Bengal: Funeral of BJP leader 4 months after her death

Calcutta. Abhijit Sarkar, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activist in West Bengal, was cremated on Thursday, four months after he was killed. This time, a BJP leader allegedly slapped a home guard after an argument over the transfer of Abhijit’s body from the morgue of a government hospital in Kolkata.

After the assembly elections in Bengal, the body of the aristocratic government was cremated in a crematorium near the residence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in South Kolkata. A video that went viral on social media shows BJP leader Devdutt Majhi slapping homeguards at the morgue of Nilratan Sarkar Medical College and Hospital, where Abhijit Sarkar’s body was kept.

The incident took place when family members of the BJP leader and Abhijit Sarkar were forced to wait a long time outside the morgue premises. A local court in Kolkata on Wednesday ordered Abhijit’s body to be handed over to his family. “They (hospital officials) were late in handing over Abhijit’s body to us and were manipulating the home guard,” Maji told reporters. Fights and clashes were going on.

BJP state president Dilip Ghosh had earlier said that the party would take action against Majhi if the allegation of slapping the home guard was proved true. However, he later said that the BJP leader had done the right thing. Ghosh told reporters, “How dare a homeguard dare to harass a brave BJP member and supporters? Mamata Banerjee’s administration does not care about the rule of law. You (Home Guard) should know that you have many years of service left and Mamata Banerjee will not save you forever.
