Teen Vaccination: Young India bright again, more than 42L jab clocked; Gujarat, MP top

On Tuesday, India’s immunization figures for 15-17 year olds crossed the 42-million mark – which was seen on the first day – with Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh violating a total of one million doses each in the two days. In these first two days, Gujarat topped the list with about 11 lakh vaccines, while Madhya Pradesh gave a total of about 10 lakh vaccines. Gujarat has a total of about 36 lakh eligible teenagers of this age, while MP has about 48 lakh adolescents.

Out of about 24 lakh eligible adolescents in Andhra Pradesh, about 9.5 lakh adolescents have been vaccinated in two days, while Karnataka has vaccinated about eight lakh out of 32 lakh eligible youth.

States like West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi, where the number of eligible adolescents is high, have not yet been able to speed up vaccination. West Bengal has so far vaccinated only 2.8 lakh youth out of more than 48 lakh eligible adolescents, while Delhi has so far vaccinated about 55,000 youth out of more than 10 lakh eligible adolescents.

Both West Bengal and Delhi have been badly affected by the third wave with high test positive rates, indicating the need for rapid vaccination.

In UP and Bihar, where there are about 1.4 crore and 84 lakh youth respectively, about 4.5 lakh and 4.25 lakh jobs have been provided so far. Telangana is also lagging behind with only 85,000 jabs given to 15-17 year olds out of 18 lakh adolescents in the state.

The 15-17 age group, meanwhile, continues to account for the highest number of vaccinations compared to other departments for the second day, registering more than 40% of the total JAB conducted on both days.
