Journalist arrested, 3 fired for making public comments before football match

Dubai. UAE prosecutors said on Friday they had arrested a TV journalist for making public comments before his team’s match against Iraq during the FIFA World Cup qualifiers earlier this month. Officials did not reveal the identity of the journalist. The journalist was arrested from the government-run Abu Dhabi Sports Channel. The broadcaster also relieved some journalists involved in the matter.

Officials called the remarks “damages to the public interest and hate speech.” A statement from the state news agency WAM said the remarks were made before the match. The WAM report states that the channel’s ‘feed (broadcast)’ has been hacked and the published clip has been confiscated. It is also promoted on some social media sites.

A detained journalist could face up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $ 1,360 (approximately Rs 1 lakh). The WAM reported that the Abu Dhabi Sports Channel had fired three people involved in the coverage of the incident.
