    Sanath started his journey with the Eastern Railway Football Club in 1949 and then joined the Aryan Club in 1951. He played for East Bengal in 1957 and joined Mohun Bagan the following year, for which he played for six years. He won the Santosh Trophy with Bengal in 1953 and 1955. He missed the 1956 Olympics after promising to play for the Aryan Club.
